5th Grade Program

Conferences: 

Your child’s teacher will reach out to you this week if she feels a conference is warranted at this time. If you would like to request a conference please email Ms. Gould or Mrs. Fiesbeck this week. 

Valentine’s Day:

We need every student to bring in a box. This could be a shoe box, small-ish Amazon box, or a cereal box. We will have Valentine’s box making parties at 10:45am on February 14. We would love for you to join us! Please bring with you some tape, glue, scissors, and creativity! There are a few items we will need for later in the day. Checkout this link for a list of items we would appreciate your help with and to sign up to join us. Additionally, students are also welcome to bring in Valentine cards from home for their classmates. We ask that if students choose to bring in cards they have one for each classmate. Suggestion: just have your child sign his or her name to the cards. If you’d prefer to address them to students we can provide a list.

Music Program:

Last week you should have received information from Ms. Mileham regarding the 1st grade program, Pajama Party. Students have all been assigned speaking roles and everyone will sing and dance. They will perform on the big stage at St. Joe High School at 5pm on Wednesday, March 27. This is a memorable part of our year together. Please mark your calendars!

Head Phones:

Please touch base with your Firstie to see how their headphones are holding up. Many of them are ready to be replaced, including the spares we purchased over the summer.

Week 21

 Week 21: January 29-February 2

Academic Updates:

• We are learning about all the different sounds the letter a can make including /a/, /ai/, /uh/, /aw/, and /ah/

• In math we will continue our work with adding and subtracting tens

• We will be summarizing fictional text things week using the hint words: somebody wanted but so then

101st Day:

Our 101st Day of First Grade is coming up soon. This is a big day at Lincoln School! For this special day we are requesting that each child bring in one plain white t-shirt. We will need to have them no later than February 5th. Our special day is February 6th. Please check out this list of additional items we could use help with.

Week 20: January 22-26

What a crazy couple of weeks! We are hoping to finally get back to normal this week!

Noteworthy:

• Ms. Gould’s class will ice skate on Monday!

• Monday is hat day for Firsties!

• Both classes will head to the Planetarium on Friday (previously scheduled for Tuesday but changed due to exam schedule alterations in the middle and high school)

Academic Updates:

• We will finish up the NWEA this week

• We have a number of things to finish up from the last couple of weeks such as more adding and subtracting tens, and word problems with tens.

• We will learn about different types of nouns, summarizing what we read, and spelling commonly misspelled words such as these, those, their, and there.

• More inference making 

• Understanding that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones

• The /ur/ sound

• Continued work with sounds and vibrations

Week 18

 Week 18: January 8-12

Welcome Back!

Upcoming Events

• Ice Skating

We are so grateful to our PTO for making it possible for us to take this fun trip! Each class will walk over with a 4th grade class, enjoy some time on the ice, and then walk back to school where the rest of the day will include all of our normal work and activities.

Mrs. Fiesbeck’s class will skate on Thursday, January 18. They will leave school at 9:40. Any parents who would like to join us please meet us at the rink at 9:55. 

Ms. Gould’s class will skate on Friday, January 19. They will leave school at 8:40. Parents, please meet us at 8:55.

• Planetarium Visit

Both classes will take a bus to Upton Middle School on January 23 where we will enjoy our district’s planetarium. Due to space constraints, no parents are allowed on this trip.

Academic Updates

We are working on:

• Making inferences in our reading

• Adding and subtracting multiples of 10

• Representing the base-ten structure of multiples of 10 up to 90 using towers of 10, drawings, numbers, and words

• The long e sound using spelling patterns /ee/ and /ea/

• Various sounds that ea can make in words such as treat, great, and bread

• Understanding sound and vibrations

Week 17

Holiday Parties

Our holiday celebrations will be on December 22 at 10:45. Attached is the sign up sheet for materials and volunteers. We look forward to seeing you!

Academics

We will continue with the long a sound this week, work on subtraction within 20, and do some imaginative writing.

Weeks 15 and 16

Snack Reminder and Update

We have two opportunities for snack each day. The expectation is that students bring their own snacks. Up until now we have been providing snacks for anyone who forgot theirs during both daily snacks. Please note that we will continue to provide snacks during morning snack only. It turns out that many of our hungry Firsties have been eating all their snacks from home in the morning and teacher-provided food in the afternoons at a very accelerated, and unsustainable rate. Please let us know if this presents an issue for your family.

Holiday Party

Our holiday celebration will be on December 22 at 10:45. Attached is a sign up sheet for materials and volunteers. 

Winter Gear

Please label your Firstie’s winter gear. They don’t always recognize their belongings and this helps us immensely.
