Pajama Party

Reminder: our program is at 5pm on Wednesday, March 27. Please be sure your Firstie is practicing their lines. We find that most students need to be encouraged to speak more slowly than normal in order to be understood by the audience.

Animal Project

We have been working on researching and studying animals in class. Please ask your Firstie all about this. They should be able to tell you their animal’s name, details about its appearance, habitat, and family. It has been a bit tricky in some cases to find out if certain animals live in groups, what babies are called, how long they live with their mothers (if at all), and so forth. We would love for you to discuss this with your Firstie and maybe do some reading together at home. In class we will be writing an informational report.  As a way to demonstrate their learning, we ask each student to create a project at home.  

*Projects are due Monday, April 15. 

Please select one of the following to make together with your Firstie:

• Diorama

• Model

• Poster

Projects should:

• Include accurate details

• Show effort

• Demonstrate understanding of the animal and habitat 

Please use whatever materials you would like.  If supplies are an issue, please let your child’s teacher know and we will provide materials to create a poster.  Completed projects will be on display at school for about a week before being returned home.

• What does it mean to add the ones and add the tens? Ask them to show you in problems like: 54 + 19 and 76 + 16

• Can you predict what will happen next?

• What is a glossary?

• What is an index?

• What is a table of contents?

• Can you name 4 different animal habitats?

• What is a trait?

• What are some ways to spell the /j/ sound?

• What does it mean to combine something?

• If Jack picked up 27 pieces of trash and Jess picked up 21 pieces of trash, who picked up more pieces? How many more pieces? Will we add or subtract to figure this out? 

• What do we call the answer in a subtraction equation?

• What do we call the answer in an additional equation?

• Can you name some 2 digit numbers that are even? Odd?

• In the number 45, what is the value of the 5? What is the value of the 4?

• What is something you appreciate? Why?

Academic Updates

We are working on:

• Elements of nonfiction

• Habitats of the rainforest, arctic, grassland, and desert

• Making predictions in fictional text

• Sample math problems: 35 + 48, 16 + 55, 34 + 59. Ask your first to use numbers, drawings, and words to explain their thinking. Then ask if they can solve each problem a different way. 

• Learning about plant and animal superpowers in Mystery Science

Soon we will begin our big animal project. More information will be coming very soon, but there will be a component to complete at home.

Week 25

 Week 25: February 26-March 1

Reminder: This Friday, March 1, is a ½ day of school

Academic Updates

We are working on:

• Sample math problems: 32 + 25 (students learned the strategy of adding the tens, 30 + 20, then adding the ones (2 + 5). 68 + 6 (students learned the strategy of making a new ten by viewing this problem as 68 + 2 + 4). 

• Problems to try at home: 42 + 36, 12 + 47, 59 + 4, 85 + 6

• More comparing and contrasting of fiction text

• Wrapping up our lights and sounds unit

• Discussing goods and services and applying our knowledge of comparing and contrasting

• Learning about the sounds the letter y makes and applying what we learn to spelling and decoding text

• Sentence construction with complex syntax from class read alouds

The First Grade Program, PAJAMA PARTY will be here before we know it! In this program, every child has a speaking role. As a group they sing several, adorable songs. We are working hard in class to prepare and practice what Firsties are learning in music class. Please help out with some additional practice at home. You can find their speaking roles on the link found here or pasted below. We are also sending home paper copies. On show day, students will perform for the entire school during the school day. Then in the evening, they perform on the big stage in the auditorium at St. Joe High School! There will be plenty of room to bring grandparents, cousins, and neighbors. The show is at 5pm. Please have your Firstie at the high school between 4:30 and 4:45.

6. Louis D. Bedtime is my Favorite time. I know it's strange to say. It’s because I get to put my PJs on to end the day.

7. Julia E. All of my pajamas are colorful and bright. And when it's time to go to bed, I party through the night. 

8. Hank E. But there are things that must be done before you go to bed. You have to take a bath and wash from toe to head. 

9. Matty E. And you have to brush your teeth. In and out, side to side, above and underneath. 

10. Brielle F. Get your wiggles out and pick up all your clothes and toys. It’s okay to have some fun, but don’t make too much noise.

29. Magnolia B. Its mouth is full of needles and it has a giant eye, and it’s moving in a hungry sort of way. 

30. Kameron S. It surely could destroy me if it only cared to try, so I hope it’s had enough to eat today. 

31. Leo D. That shadow makes me nervous. I don't dare to close my eyes. I’m afraid I may be eaten head and all. 

32. Dalton D. If I fall asleep tonight I’ll be taken by surprise by that shadow dancing on my bedroom wall.
