Week 18

 Week 18: January 8-12

Welcome Back!

Upcoming Events

• Ice Skating

We are so grateful to our PTO for making it possible for us to take this fun trip! Each class will walk over with a 4th grade class, enjoy some time on the ice, and then walk back to school where the rest of the day will include all of our normal work and activities.

Mrs. Fiesbeck’s class will skate on Thursday, January 18. They will leave school at 9:40. Any parents who would like to join us please meet us at the rink at 9:55. 

Ms. Gould’s class will skate on Friday, January 19. They will leave school at 8:40. Parents, please meet us at 8:55.

• Planetarium Visit

Both classes will take a bus to Upton Middle School on January 23 where we will enjoy our district’s planetarium. Due to space constraints, no parents are allowed on this trip.

Academic Updates

We are working on:

• Making inferences in our reading

• Adding and subtracting multiples of 10

• Representing the base-ten structure of multiples of 10 up to 90 using towers of 10, drawings, numbers, and words

• The long e sound using spelling patterns /ee/ and /ea/

• Various sounds that ea can make in words such as treat, great, and bread

• Understanding sound and vibrations

Week 17

 Week 17: December 18-22

Holiday Parties

Our holiday celebrations will be on December 22 at 10:45. Attached is the sign up sheet for materials and volunteers. We look forward to seeing you!

Academics

We will continue with the long a sound this week, work on subtraction within 20, and do some imaginative writing.

Weeks 15 and 16

 Weeks 15 and 16: December 4-15

Snack Reminder and Update

We have two opportunities for snack each day. The expectation is that students bring their own snacks. Up until now we have been providing snacks for anyone who forgot theirs during both daily snacks. Please note that we will continue to provide snacks during morning snack only. It turns out that many of our hungry Firsties have been eating all their snacks from home in the morning and teacher-provided food in the afternoons at a very accelerated, and unsustainable rate. Please let us know if this presents an issue for your family.

Winter Gear

Please label your Firstie’s winter gear. They don’t always recognize their belongings and this helps us immensely.

We had two lovely books donated to first grade during the book fair that do not have names on them. We would love to thank the purchasers! If you or someone in your family purchased a book during the book fair for one of our classrooms please let us know:)

Week 14

 Week 14: November 27-December 1

We will be very busy during the month of December, but we try very hard to maintain a “business as usual vibe” as much as we can.

This week we will:

• Work on adding and subtracting within 20

• Practice our fluency within 10

• Hone our writing skills with our new hallway project 

• Enjoy Hansel and Gretel in our weekly book club and enjoy some related STEM activities

• Analyze story elements

• What do you do if somebody is distracting you at your table during instruction or work time?

• What books do you have in your bin right now?

Academic Updates:

Math: We will be subtracting teen numbers.

Foundational Skills: Our focus this week is on the long o sound using the VCe spelling pattern in words like: zone, home, cone, cyclone, and joke.

Comprehension Skills: We will be applying what we learned about inside and outside character traits to our writing.

Ask your Firstie:

• What is your scarecrow’s name? What does it look like and what does it like to do?

• What does Sneaky E do?

• How are teen numbers made? (10 and some more?)

• If I have 10 pieces of candy and you have 5, how many pieces do we have altogether?

• If Uncle Fred has 17 pieces of candy and gives you 7 how many pieces will he have left?

Classroom donations

We have some fun things planned leading up to Thanksgiving.  There are also a few consumable supplies we could use a hand with. Please check out this sign up sheet.  We need most of the items for projects THIS FRIDAY. Thank you! We appreciate all your help!

Week 11

 Week 11: November 6-10

Academic Updates:

Math: We will be working with teen numbers-constructing and adding them.

Foundational Skills: Spelling multisyllabic words will be our focus.

Comprehension Skills: We will be learning about inside and outside character traits through a variety of reading alouds this week including books about scarecrows. 

Ask Your Firstie:

• How many syllables are in the following words: November, planet, stars, permission, give, turkey

• What are the friends of ten? (Try naming a number 0-10 and have your Firstie tell you how many more are needed to make ten). 

• When/where is the best way to see stars in the sky?

• When are some times it’s necessary to use a capital letter?

• What do these marks mean and when do we use them? . ! ?
